| The peninsula as a surface of 144,000 square
kilometers. Its length is 1,300 km which makes it twice as long as
Florida, USA and 160 Km. longer than Italy.
The border between the states of California and Arizona in the USA and the state of "Baja California", which is the northern Mexican state of the peninsula starts at the Pacific ocean and travels 240 km., toward the east. The population in that region is more than 40 million but after only few kilometers toward the south there is only approximately 4% of the Mexican population and a few foreigners thus making the peninsula not very populated.
The width of the peninsula varies enormously. A few kilometers north of La Paz the peninsula is only 50 km. wide; La Paz is the capital of the State of Baja California Sur which covers the southern half of the peninsula. An article in the Money magazine and on CNN said that the city was one of the 8 best places in North America to live in and the only one in Mexico.
Annual rain varies but rarely goes over 250mm. and certain regions receive rain only every 4 - 5 years.
The highest mountain peak (3,095 meters) is called "Picacho del Diablo" (Devil's peak). it is situated in the northern part of the peninsula and is part of the "Sierra de San Pedro Mártir" mountain chain. From October and until the end of May it is covered with snow. Because of it's height it can be seen as far away as 250km and even from the western side of main land Mexico.
The beginning of the tropic zone is marked by a monument in the form of a ball that is situated on the side of highway number one between the village of Santiago and Miraflores .
The end of the peninsula was baptized "Land's End" or "Cabo" by the Americans. Its official name is "El Arco de Cabo San Lucas". The last rock formations of the peninsula dive more than 2,700 meters in the Pacific ocean.
In 1989 Cabo San Lucas was a small village with a few Mexicans and foreigners (Gringo) with only 3 small hotels. In 2008 it is one of the biggest tourist center of Mexico. The region includes Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo with a population of more than 400,000 persons and more than 15,000 hotel rooms and growing everyday.
